Die Gesellschaft war ein britischer Automobilhersteller sowie ein größerer Lieferant und Händler von Motoren. Die Gruppe kontrollierte dabei bekannte britische Motorenhersteller wie Hillman, Humber, Singer, Sunbeam, Talbot, Commer und Karrier. Der Höhepunkt war 1960 erreicht, als man Produktionsstätten im ganzen Vereinigten Königreich wie auch in neun anderen Ländern hatte. Leider hatte das Unternehmen aber mit einer Unterkapitalisierung zu kämpfen und schaffte es dadurch nicht, diverse Probleme und vor allem die Verluste aus der Einführung des mit einem neuen Aluminium-Motor ausgestatteten Kleinwagens "Hillman Imp" zu stemmen. Im gegenseitigen Einvernehmen wurde Rootes Motors ab Mitte 1964 nach und nach von der Chrysler Corporation übernommen. Unfortunately the company was under-capitalised and unable to survive industrial relations problems and losses from the 1963 introduction of a new aluminium-engined small car called "Hillman Imp". By mutual agreement, Rootes Motors was taken over in stages by Chrysler Corporation from mid-1964.
