1895 KASHGAR, SINKIANG: Registered cover from Ludwig Hedin, Stockholm, Sweden to Dr. SVEN HEDIN at KASCHGAR c/o Russian Consul-General (Nikolai Fedorovich) Petrovsky at Kashgar via St. Petersburg and Osh, Fergana Province, franked on the reverse by 1891 KOII. 30øre brown and 50øre grey tied by Stockholm '17.8.95' cds, blue St. Petersburg transit datestamp and Osh Fergana '24.8.1895' arrival cds in blue alongside. A very interesting cover sent during Sven Hedin's expedition through the Tarim Basin, Tibet and Kashmir. (Although the Russian postal system did not extend to Kashgar at that time, the Russian Consul-General in Kashgar rendered every possible assistance to Sven Hedin by enlisting Cossack horsemen to carry mail and supplies for Sven Hedin between Osh and Kashgar.) THIS EXTRAORDINARY COVER IS PROBABLY THE EARLIEST COVER TO KASHGAR OF THE CHINESE PROVINCE OF SINKIANG. H. Obermüller Wilén certificate (2017).
