1852 "Visit to the Holy Land" by Madame Ida Pfeiffer. Ingram Cooke & Co, London1852, 1852. Contemporary Half-Calf. Book Condition: Good. 8vo. xv, 336 pp.; 8 pp. adv. frontispiece tinted engraving, vignette engraving on title page, 6 tinted engravings, title gilt on raised spine, marbled endpapers, edges slightly rubbed, translated from the German by H.W.Dulcken, first edition in English. ‘The first English edition appeared in 1852. The original German edition Vienna in 1844. Madame Pfeiffer travelled around the world twice. This journey to the Holy Land took place in 1842. The illustrations in this work are of interest in the development of colour printing. The book was advertised as containing plates 'printed in colours'. These plates are tinted engravings, engraved by Edmund Evans after designs by Birket Foster and prepared for three printings in dark brown, buff and blue.
