1879: Prepaid cover from the Gambia to Basel, Switzerland endorsed "via Liverpool" with manuscript "3" in red at top being the amount due to Great Britain from the 4 d. rate. "GAMBIA / PAID" despatch cds (Nov 12) and "Paid / Liverpool / Br. Packet" cds in red (Dec 1). Whilst both the Gambian and Liverpool Postz Offices marked the cover 'paid' the Swiss charged due on arrival in Basel with "65" rappen in red manuscript and taxed the cover with Swiss Postage Due 5 c., 10 c. and 50 c. blue tied by Basel cds's (Dec 3).
