Incoming Mail 1872: Entire letter from Montevideo to Port Louis endorsed "par Str. Amazone" struck with fine octagonal "MONTEVIDEO / PAQ. FR. J No. 3" despatch in black (Jan 31) with initial "Affr. obligatoire" manuscript deleted at left and struck with rare "FR. / 3FR 81c." Accountancy marking in black (Van Der Linden fig. 1291). Reverse with Paris and Marseille transits (Feb 29) and thence carried on the "Cambodge" to Aden and "Danube" to Mauritius with arrival cds (april 14) on reverse. Charged "11d." due in blue crayon manuscript for a ¼ ounce letter (French 5d., British 5d., Mauritius credit 1d.). Rare.
