1866 (5 Oct) cover paying 45c (British Mail via Marseilles for a letter up to a half ounce), with a combination of 15c black (straight edge at right) and 30c orange, with printed address to "Zanzibar, East Coast of Africa," and a route directive "Via Marseilles," at upper left. There is an added label "Care Dr. Brooks, Seychelle Isles." at bottom left, with red "Boston Am. Pkt. 5 Oct Paid" on back, plus Mauritius (3 Dec) and red London Paid transits, red crayon "4" (British Colonial credit). A fine and attractive cover, ex-Krug etc. The addressee, Albert P. Goodhue, was a ship chandler and businessman from Salem, Massachusetts (probably related to Benjamin Goodhue, who served in the state senate from 1784-89 and then as Massachusetts representative in the first U.S. congress. He was also instrumental in establishing many of this country's revenue laws) -
