1833 Foreign Legion/Légion étrangère/Fremdenlegion: Entire letter sent by a German soldier serving in a battalion of the Foreign Legion from Bône (today Annaba), Northern Algeria home to Messingen (now Mössingen) near Rothenburg/Neckar, Kingdom of Württemberg, and describing his journey and fate ('I could not arrive America but caught in Paris and now serving in the Foreign Legion in North Africa ...'). The letter bears "B/ARMÉE EXPÉDre/D'AFRIQUE" handstamp in black, "C.T.F." transit h/s in red, both on front, and on the reverse with script handstamp "Purif(ié à Toulon)" (letter with respective disinfection holes), also with several charge marks. An interesting and early letter from the Foreign Legion (founded in 1831).
