1911: King George V Era -- Admiral Issues. ECKERLIN PLATE 'ESSAYS' three full sheet of 25 of the 3 cents value in DARK BLUE, DARK GREEN and ROSE-RED, printed in 1928 on stiff card with the Admiral design in a reversed and enlarged format (to prevent accusations of forgery) for presentation to the American Bank Note Co. in hopes of selling them Dr. Eckerlin's rotary press process for intaglio printing (developed by Herbst & Illig in Germany).
EXTREMELY RARE AS FULL SHEETS (most have now been cut into singles or pairs). The 75 stamps are all in Choice and very fine condition. The Brigham Canada collection had as largest multiple only a bloc of nine of the 3 cents in dark-green which was described as "possibly unique" (see lot 8), for the other colours a bloc of four was the largest multiple.

According to the October 2002 issue of Maple Leaves: "Dr. Eckerlin, was director of Herbst & Illig of Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. In 1928, Dr. Eckerlin contacted Treadway of the ABN for purposes of promoting a proprietary rotary intaglio printing process that was faster and cheaper than steel engraved printing. Treadway requested samples of Herbt & Illig’s provided a small selection of ABNC banknote vignette proofs and an experimental sheet of
the 3-cent Admiral which had been prepared by surface printing to Eckerlin for reproduction."
