1854-57 AUSTRIAN OCCUPATION OF ROMANIA DURING THE CRIMEAN WAR. Very fresh cover from Austrian Fieldpost office in JASSY with extensive honorific address to Alfons Graf von Wimpffen in Bucharest, franked with extremely fine Austria 1850 9 kr. blue type IIIb on handmade paper, tied by "FELDPOST No 2 13/4" cds (Müller 3443a, Tchilinghirian fig. 756) well struck in black, the place of despatch noted as "JASSY" in manuscript. Reverse with arrival cds "K.K.FELDPOSTAMT No 1 16/4" (Müller 3436b = 600 points; Tchilinghirian fig. 712) of the Bucharest Fieldpost. An extraordinary and stunning cover. The addressee Alfons Maximilian Graf von Wimpffen (born 1828 in Hietzing nearby Vienna; died 1866 in the battle of Nachod against the Prussians) was an Austrian Colonel and commander of the infrantery regiment no. 20.
THIS "FELDPOST No 2" COVER IS BY FAR THE FINEST OF THE FEW KNOWN AND A RARITY OF ROMANIAN POSTAL HISTORY. Research through the famous name sales reveals that only one other is recorded with its franking described as in perfect condition (ex Provera 1982 and ex Bierer collection), all the other ones show some kind of faults, including the four registered covers that have partially torn stamps. Furthermore this FELDPOST No2 cover is the only known that was sent between two Austrian field post offices stationned in Romania. Cert. Ferchenbauer (2004): "es handelt sich um ein Kabinettstück". Provenance: Collection Dr. Anton & Elisabeth Jerger (sold in 2005 for about 26.000 CHF fees included)
