1861: Sardinia IVth issue: 3 L dark copper horizontal pair with good margins, 80 c orange yellow three pieces and 40 c red vermilion on small recomended letter from Messina (Sicily) to Lyon (France). The 3 L pair is tied, the other stamps are cancelled by the bourbon cds "MESSINA 26 5 61" with palms, oval bourbon "ASSICURATA" and "P.D" alongside. French red "D. SICILES MARSEILLE" entry mark and "(C)HARGE" on front, Lyon arrival and MESSINA cds on the back. Certificate Alberto Diena (1959) and Bottacchi (2016).
This item is no. 18 (of 32) on the Sassone list of letters known franked with the 3 L. This letter is one of the key items for every exhibition: May 1861 is the transitional month from the old bourbonic currency to the new Italian currency. In this month the tarifs are in the old currency, but the stamps are in the new currency. The old, bourbonic tarif of 3 x 35 grana, doubled for registration = 210 grana where 9 Lire on the exchange rate 1 grano = 4,25 centesimi. When calculating the single stamps: 40 c = 9 1/2 gr + 80 c = 19 gr * 3 + 3 L = 70 1/2 gr x 2 the total is 207.50 grana, missing 2.50 grana equals 10 c. It is assumed a Sarde 10 C is missing on this letter, since the C of "Charge" is also missing.

1861 û Sardegna IV emissione: 3L rame scuro, coppia orizzontale ben marginata, 80c giallo
arancio, tre esemplari, e 40c rosso vermiglio (pos. 12) su lettera femminile "ASSICURATA" da
"MESSINA 26 5 61" a Lione, per un totale di 8,80L, in difetto di 10c rispetto alla tariffa borbonica
vigente di 8,90L. EÆ da supporre che un 10c fosse stato applicato in basso, in coincidenza della
"C" mancante del bollo accessorio "CHARGE" e successivamente andato perduto. I francobolli di
Sardegna furono introdotti in Sicilia a partire dal 1 maggio 1861 ma, per rendere meno drastico
nellÆisola il passaggio alla nuova valuta italiana, venne mantenuta ufficialmente quella borbonica
fino alla fine del mese. Per tal motivo, durante questo mese, si riscontrano lettere in tariffa
borbonica composte con i nuovi francobolli sardi, previo il calcolo di conversione nella vecchia
valuta. Insieme spettacolare e rarissimo, pezzo fondamentale in una collezione da esposizione del
