lot # 877 - PH: WWII Civilian Postal Links

Tuesday Apr 09, 2019 20:00 Asia/Jerusalem

Wartime outgoing mail (undercover address): 24 FE 1942 surface mailed cover from JERUSALEM to ISTANBUL, franked 15m (3 color franking) per period surface mail rate & tied by 2 strikes of single-circle local postmark; passed J30 Palestine censor; backstamped 2-3-1942 ANKARA transit (suggesting inland transport by rail, not sea) & 4 March arrival Cut open at top. The curious brevity of addressee's name, also being British(?) + post office box address in neutral country suggests that this was an undercover address and possibly addressed to a code name, but so far not documented. Locale was known as major center of spying and intrigue in WWII.
