Rare Banque de France Specimen Print "500 Francs Renaissance" û "LINOGRAVURE", this technique showing "white areas" which are the printed areas later in the final result print. That means the white parts show the areas which are engraved and enable the printer to see where the engraving has errors before printing the note. The ink on the plate only covers the "not engraved" areas so the whole print looks like a "negative" version of the later...

This 100 Francs 1861 Proof print of an unissued design was unknown until now. Produced by or for the Banque de France this proof is printed on thin paper, resembling the banknote paper of that time, mounted on thick cardboard with printers annotations at borders. The design somehow resembles the New Caledonia baknote issues of that time and makes it likely that there was really a plan for issuing a new series of banknotes during that time....
