Tuesday Apr 09, 2019 20:00 Asia/Jerusalem

Romania > Bucharest: Choral Temple 50 Bani "Hazkarat Neshamot" donation token (for recalling the deceased), struck in silvered copper-nickel, circa. 1912; by Jewish Romanian engraver Moise Carniol Fiul; size: 22mm; weight: 2.65g. Obverse: 3-line Hebrew legend: "Tzdaka Ba'ad Hazkarat Neshama" (Charity Towards Remembering a Soul); Romanian legend abv: "Pentru Sustinerea Cantinelor Scolare" (To Support School Cafeterias); in exergue "Carniol Fiul". Reverse: Star of David with Hebrew letters "HN" (Hazkarat Neshamot), in center; Romanian legend: "Congreg. Templul. Choral Bucuresci • 50 Bani". The "Mentioning of Departed Souls" is a memorial service occuring during the general morning service on last day of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot (the 3 pilgrimage festivals), and on Yom Kippur; as it mentions charitable offerings, it is customary for the utterer to promise to give a donation - hence this token. In BU; Schaffer BUC-380 rates this "extremely rare" (6-15 pieces known).
