Nov. 1947 at start of War; initially known as 3rd Bn of Hagana's "field corps". Originally composed of youths from 'frontier' neighborhoods of TLV, so nicknamed "the suburban bn"; served in frontier zones around TLV; c. Mar. '48 assigned to region bet. Gedera & N. Negev; helped fend off Egyptian incursion into Israel. Reknowed Jewish partisan, Abba Kovner, served as bn's 'public relations' officer; deputy bn cdr was future CoS Tzv Tzur.
