Lot 5x documents related to IDF & pre-IDF defence: 1) 27-01-1944 dated receipt for 2 Lira contribution to wartime "Magbit Hitgaysut ve Hatzala" (campaign for enlistment & salvation) & stamped by J'lem branch thereof; 2) 24-03-1948 dated pre-IDF receipt for 75 Lira "Tax for our Defence" initiative of above campaign & stamped by its secretariate; 3) 27-09-1948 dated authorization to Yocheved to transfer 2 pianos to "the front" & 15-10-1948 confirmation of their receipt, on IDF organizational officer J'lem region stationary; 4) 24-03-1949 dated receipt on "IDF Authority J'lem | Office of Military Governor [Dov Yosef] | Supply Dept" stationary, for envelopes with vouchers of various series' & w/comments on back; 5) 21-05-1957 dated temporary IDF discharge booklet for private enlisted in infantry between 15 May 1948 & 15 June 1949 and discharged 30 June 1957; 6) additional receipt of unknown origin, may be for Talmud Torah c. 1930's

Israel: unit pin of 4th Battalion of "Har'el Brigade" of Palmach, circa. 1948-49; not maker-marked; weight: 3.35g. Design based on Palmach's emblem by Shoshana Spector (sword across two ears of wheat w/name); it incorporates the 4th Battalion's name with word "Portzim" ("penetrators" /"breachers") in Heb. on the sword itself. The 4th 'Portzim' Battalion together with the 5th 'Shaar Ha'Gai' and 6th 'Jerusalem' battalions formed the Har'el Brigade, which was commanded by Yitzhak Rabin and fought around Jerusalem, penetrating the seige imposed by the Arab Legion on the city.

Pin of the "Exhibition of the Revolt", 1958; 1.6 x 2.4cm, 1.05g. Design of torch held by hand & legend "Exhibition of the Revolt". Event took place 14 Dec. 1958 (last day of Chanukka) at the Jabotinski Institute in TLV. Menachem Begin (leader of the Freedom ['Herut'] Party) delivered a speech expounding on the miracle of the victory of underground fighters of the Etzel, and their steadfastness as the few in the face of the many (i.e. the British and the Arabs). The Postal Authority created a special cachet to commemorate the event, known there in English as "Fight for Freedom Exhibition".

Shield-shaped pin depicting rifle, grenade & olive branch of recently won War of Independence (1948-49), which was fought in the immediate environs & surroundings of Gush Dan, whose major cities are TLV-Jaffo, Ramat Gan, Givatayim, Bnei Brak & Herzliya. Probably issued to residents who fought in the War. Rarely encountered.

Israel: rare service pin of the 9th Palmach "Mechanized Attack Battalion" ("Gdud Pshita Memuchan"), 1948-49; 3g, 1.5x3cm. Aka the "Attack Battalion" ("Gdud Pshita") of the Negev Brigade. Formed June 1948 from "Negev Beasts" commando + 2 armoured jeep cpys, motorized infantry & halftrack company; absorbed "French Commando", foreign Jewish volunteers + veterans of Palmach sea force ("PalYam"), reaching 500 men incl 70 women by Fall 1948, commanded by Chaim Bar-Lev (future Chief of Staff). Unit fought in Negev region; Feb-Mar. 1949 reconnaisance missions prior to conquest of S. Negev & Eilat; after war, frontier guard duties; Sept. 1949 assigned to 7th Armoured Brigade.

War of Independence pre-State era enlistment card: issued by the Center of the Command for National Service for a Yitzhak Avrahami son of Nachum, born 1906 & residing in J'lem; signed & stamped by the center to confirm his reporting to duty; stamped on back by circular illustrated cachet bearing name "Metzuda" (citadel) - possibly referring to the J'lem location person reported to. The issuing body "Mifkad haAm" existed between 29 Nov. 1947 & eve of Israel's Statehood, to mobilize civilians for national defence prior to the establishment of the national bodies for this purpose.

Pin probably belonging to the Lechi underground organization, with the twin-fingered emblem of the organization & legend below "If I Forget Thee O Jerusalem", circa. 1948; size: 31mm high, 1.75g. Lechi's emblem was only adopted in 1948 and org. was disbanded the same year. This pin should not to be confused with a near-identical but different pin of the 21st (1939) Zionist Congress.

Defender of Jerusalem ("Magen Yerushalayim") badge, 1948, w/safety-pin back; 3.15g. Two-piece badge w/white metal base shield w/"Jerusalem" & emblem of pre-State Army "Hagana" in bronze superimposed; worn on left pocket of both military & civilian dress, precursor to War of Independence campaign ribbon (instituted 1951), which replaced it (and a miniature Defender of Jerusalem pin worn on that). Awarded to soldiers & civilians who served under command of Officer Commanding Jerusalem bet. April - 10 June 1948 ("second phase" & part of third of War, after stage when Jewish & Arab forces fought for control of transport/supply routes. "First Truce" came into effect on 11 June (J'lem front cdr, Mickey Marcus, was killed by friendly fire on the 10th).
