Judaica UK JLB Jewish Lads' Brigade Goldsmid Long Service 29 mm Medal 1910s.

Goldsmid Memorial Bronze Medal for long and efficient service in the Jewish Lads' Brigade, the obverse bearing the head of the founder of the movement, in high relief, the reverse displaying a "Menora" a seven branch candlestick.

The UK's oldest Jewish youth movement, it was founded in 1895 as the Jewish Lads' Brigade by Colonel Albert E. W. Goldsmid, a senior army officer, to provide an interest for children of the many poor immigrant families who were coming into England at that time. The first company was launched in London's East End but others soon appeared throughout the city and the provinces. The movement later spread as far as South Africa and Canada.

The Jewish Lads' Brigade was a military association of English Jewish boys, formed, organized, and directed by Col. Albert E. W. Goldsmid "to instil into the rising generation from their earliest years habits of orderliness, cleanliness, and honour, so that in learning to respect themselves they will do credit to their community." It is the first association of its kind. Jewish lads are eligible for membership between the ages of twelve and sixteen, and may remain, up to the rank of sergeant, until the age of eighteen. There is no limit to the age of superior officers. There are at present three regiments in existence: the London Regiment, consisting of all the battalions and companies in the London district; the Northern Regiment, consisting of similar units in the north and midlands of England; and the Colonial Regiment, consisting of companies in Canada and South Africa. In addition to the infantry training there are also signalling and ambulance organizations. Stress is laid upon the athletic clubs in connection with the organization.

Very Nice. Fully authentic.

A voucher for the receipt of milk and food, for a six - year - old boy, by the head of the ghetto in the Lodz ghetto. 1940.

[1] leaves, paper. 11x14 cm German.

Background: Unlike other ghettos where food consumption and basic goods were based on smuggling out of the ghetto, in Lodz it was almost impossible because of the strict adherence of the German authorities. The Jews were completely dependent on the German authorities and the Judenrat for food, medicine, and other essential equipment. As a result, hunger and disease were rampant in the ghetto. About 164,000 people were forced to cram into an area of 4 square kilometers, of which only 2.4 kilometers were habitable. In 1944 the ghetto was liquidated by the Nazi forces.

Condition: Very good.   Show more Show less
