The Wigan Gaslight Company was established in 1822 by Deed of Settlement. The works were built on Chapel Lane alongside the railway and the canal. In 1855, a second company, the Wigan Gas Meter and Fitting Company, was formed and operated from the same Chapel Lane works. In 1861, the Wigan Gas Meter and Fitting Company was incorporated as the Wigan Gas Company by an Act of Parliament. The earlier Wigan Gaslight Company was dissolved and its assets transferred to the new company.
