lot # 240 - Tokens: Jewish Charities

Tuesday Apr 09, 2019 20:00 Asia/Jerusalem

Israel: "Yeshiva Meah Shearim" blessing/good luck token, circa. 1960's; bronze; not maker-marked; size: 25.5mm x 30.5mm; weight: 5.8g. Obverse: English legend & Hebrew good wish for "Blessing and Success". Reverse: Star of David & word "Zion" in center. This Jewish religious studies school is one of the most prominent ones in Jerusalem, founded in 1885, and located in the neighborhood of Meah Shearim ("A Hundred Gates"), which is usually known for its strong anti-Zionist tendencies, though this Yeshiva is Zionist-religious. The Yeshiva experienced periods of economic distress in the past and it may be that this token of blessing was given in exchange for donations. In VF.
