The best identifying mark is a faint hairline scratch from the bottom of the eye to the ear. Rare EDS, Manley state 1.0. The repunching on the 7 is sharp and most of the dentils are clear. 1793 C-2 R3 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Choice lustrous medium brown and chocolate with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Hints of attractive light bluish steel overtone show on both sides. The frosty surfaces are nearly flawless and the eye appeal is outstanding for the grade. The only imperfections are a microscopic planchet chip on the rim at the top of the reverse and an even smaller chip just inside the border beads over the left side of the O in OF, both as struck, plus a hint of reddish carbon at the right side of the first A in AMERICA. Late die state with obvious fine die rust evident on both sides. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees CW relative to a normal head-to-foot die orientation, a condition that is often found on this variety. Both sides are rather well centered on the planchet leaving ample borders outside the ring of beads. Our grade is MS60 Choice. The reverse of this half cent was plated in the Ebenezer Gilbert's 1916 reference "The United States Half Cents" (Plate 1, the 1793 "1-3" reverse), and both sides were plated in the 1914 ANS Exhibition of United States and Colonial Coins Catalog (Plate 23, the Crosby 2-A provided by Hillyer Ryder). In addition this is the plate coin for the die variety (the large photos) and for the late die state (the smaller State II photos) in "Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents 1793-1857." The attribution and Missouri Cabinet provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the finest of only 2 graded Mint State for the variety. PCGS #35006. (Note: This half cent has been part of the fabulous Missouri Cabinet since the purchase of the Showers Collection in 1976 but it was misplaced in 1997 and was not included in our sale of that collection in January 2014. The coin was subsequently "rediscovered" after the auction. This offering completes the Missouri Cabinet sale, and we are making copies of this page available for insertion into the January 2014 catalog so that important reference can represent the complete Missouri Cabinet Collection.).
Estimated Value $80,000-UP.

1739 Admiral Vernon Medal of Portobello in Brass VF30. Type with Vernon and Don Blass. Frosty medium chocolate mixed with golden brown. Nicely struck and well centered. The only mark is a chip out of the planchet at the rim over the head of the standing Admiral Vernon. A nice example of a variety missing from the extensive collection of Vernon medals offered in the John Ford collection (neither the obverse nor the reverse die was represented in that landmark sale by Stack's 1/16/2006). Weight 199.8 grains.

1794 C-9 R2 High Relief Head F12+. Small Edge Letters. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. No corrosion or verdigris, but there is some soft dirt in protected areas. The sharpness is F15 or slightly better but there are a few marks on the reverse. The notable defects are a thin planchet void from over the C in CENT to the right foot of the I in UNITED and a shallow void on the rim between the D in UNITED and the adjacent S in STATES (both as struck but they do catch your eye), plus a rim bruise at the I in AMERICA. The obverse is choice. LDS, Manley state 3.0, with a dull but clear die crack from the rim through the cap to the hair where it fades away. The date and legends are complete and clear.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
