 Lot 21 - Medals, Tokens. - yigal avrahamy Auction 03 - Coins and Banknotes of Israel and Palestine, medals and tokens.Token - Abrahams 1855 - Tasmania.Lewis Abrahams was certainly living in Hobart Town in 1835, records show that he was the occupier of a house and garden at 19 Bathurst Street and was in partnership with a certain H.C. Davis in a shop at 102 Liverpool Street. He was married in the Jewish Synagogue in December 1855. It appears that Davis withdrew from the partnership and Abrahams carried on alone. He died in Hobart in 1860.' (McNeice, p.70)
According to the details recorded on his tokens, Abrahams was a draper.
There is no listing in the Archives Office of Tasmania Pioneer's Database for a Lewis Abrahams.
Abrahams is mentioned in a number of documents held by the Hobart Hebrew Congregation, published in A Few from Afar. He is listed as a contributor to the fund for the construction of the Hobart Synagogue in 1844-1845, and as a 'seatholder' (financial member) of the Hobart Hebrew Congregation for some time during the period 1852-1877 (Ellis, pp. 33, 87)
He issued one variety of penny, and one variety of halfpenny tokens in 1855. The tokens were made for him by Heaton and Sons of Birmingham.

The institution was founded in 1925 and became the the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital (where the gene for Tay-Sachs disease was discovered); in 1968 it became Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center.

Obverse: antlered Jew riding large cock, 5 smaller roosters in background; 2-lined legend above: "WER KEINER I ST DER KAN NOCH EINER | WER DEN" ['Where no-one can become someone']. In the front, in the center of the medal a portrait of Rabbi Chaim Kanivsky dedicated to his learning, and around it the words "מטבע לשמירה ולהצלחה, ממרן שר התורה הגר"ח קניבסקי שליט"א".
In the back, the inscription "Ner Echad" in large letters (and also in Hebrew letters "נר אחד"), and below it is translated into English "ONE LIGHT" with a drawing of a candle flame between the words. Around it the inscription "מטבע לשמירה ולהצלחה, ממרן שר התורה הגר"ח קניבסקי שליט"א".

Baffier and minted by Janvier-Duval; weight: 54.15g; size: 50mm. Obverse depicts left facing bust of Mercier, with legend around rim and "Souscription Nationale" ("national fundraiser") below; on reverse within leafed frame, a 12-line excerpt of Mercier's refusal to accept the French Parliament's full exoneration (1906) of Captain Alfred Dreyfus. Plain rim with "bronze" and Janvier-Duval emblem stamped. Mercier was the first public accuser of Dreyfus (1894), remained a resolute opponent of his, and became a symbol of the anti-Semitic right wing in France long after the trial.
