William Wordsworth, ALS, March 23, 1843 With Interesting Historic Content. William Wordsworth (April 7, 1770 - April 23, 1850) was a major English poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped launch the Romantic movement in English literature with their 1798 joint publication, Lyrical Ballads. Romanticism emerged in the late eighteenth century in reaction to the rationalism of the Enlightenment. W. Wordsworth and other Romantics emphasized the vitality of everyday life, the importance of human emotions, and the illuminating power of nature. (Adapted from the New World Encyclopedia™). This lot contains a letter written and signed by Wordsworth (Portions Archivally Backed), The letter to Mr. George Prentiss, (In Memoir of S.S. Prentiss) discuss the fact that family members of Mrs. Wordsworth, her mother and sister who can ill afford the loss of principle have purchased bonds from Mississippi and it appears that the legislative body has repudiated the debt. “ on account of the sum of money at stake…they have no funds…All that you say both respecting the depth and extent of the indignation excited in your country by this shameless dishonesty…” Supporting documentation as well as a 5x7 lithograph of Wordsworth accompanies the letter. Lot was last sold in Christie’s East Auction November 24, 1998. Lot # 112.
