1915/16 JAMAICA RED CROSS stamps small collection on written up pages, including: 5 cvs & 88 stamps ( 33 are mint & 55 used). The stps were issued by the Jamaica War Stamp League, founded in November 1915 by Lewis Ashenheim, a Kingston Jewish Solicitor. The aims of the league were to support the British Red Cross, collect funds for the purchase of aircraft for the Royal Flying Corps, and the relief of Polish Jews. One fundraising method was the sale of 1/2d Charity Labels which were available from Post Offices. They depicted a biplane above a Red Cross and were printed by Dennison Manufacturing Co. U.S.A. Four different types are shown: 1) 1st December 1915 printed in Red ( 4 cvs & 25 stamps, 6 are on c/o's with regular Jamaica stamps); 2) 22nd December 1915 'Jamaica' added in Red (13 stamps, 2 c/o's); 3) 15th January 1916 with 'Jamaica' added in Black (1 cv, 44 stamps, 3 c/o's); 4) 11th March 1916 with 'Half Penny' added in Black (7 stamps) ; a study of the diff. papers, the Jamaica town pmks & TPO's, the Ovpts varieties all on 9 album pages + the cvs, f-vf (x94 items)
