1804 C-6 R2 Spiked Chin G6. Slightly sharper but there is a subtle bend in the planchet creating a bulge near the rim behind the head. Otherwise this piece is smooth with only light contact marks. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Rare M-LDS, Manley state 10.2, Braig state 7.2, with a thick die crack from the left top of the M to the cud over the adjacent A in AMERICA. The earlier cud breaks on the reverse are strong.

Lot 149 - united states draped bust half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84

1808/7 C-1 R7 Overdate 8 over 7 AG3. Sharpness VG7 but there are numerous tiny pits mixed with fine granularity on both sides. A small area of shallow corrosion in the field before the neck and a smaller spot of corrosion at AL in HALF are the most-obvious marks. No verdigris or contact marks. Slightly glossy medium chocolate and darker steel. The date is complete and easily readable and the legends are complete except for weakness at OF AMERICA and the fraction thanks to an uneven strike on that side, as usual due to non-parallel die faces. EDS, Manley state 1.0. The die crack through the top of STAT to the dentils left the S is light but visible and the crack through the top of TED to t+X78he dentils is faint. To the best of our knowledge this is the only example known of the early state and an uncracked example is unknown. It is speculated that the non-parallel die faces and the uneven strike pressures that resulted from them are responsible for the early if not immediate cracking of the reverse die. This is the Manley plate coin for the variety (the large photos) and of the early die state (his state 1.0). Less than 10 examples are known and only 1 of those grades better than VG. A great rarity and a major key to completing a half cent collection by Cohen variety numbers, regardless of the die state.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.

1797 C-2 R3 Plain Edge AG3. A couple points sharper but covered with fine to moderate granularity under rather glossy dark chocolate brown toning. No verdigris. The only marks are a dull, shallow dent in the field above the end of the pole and another at the B in LIBERTY. The date and legends are not strong but they are easily readable except for RICA and the fraction due to swelling in that area.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

Lot 117 - united states draped bust half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84

1804 C-2 R6 AG3. Off-Center Tab Strike. Slightly sharper, especially on the reverse, but there is an area of roughness left of the hair ribbon. No verdigris and only minor contact marks, including several tiny pinpricks in the field above the bust. Recolored a mostly glossy chocolate brown with bluish steel overtones. The date is weak but easily readable and the legends are complete except for the I in UNITED, which is gone (the left edge of the reverse is always weakly struck on this variety). This piece appears to have been struck normally and then struck a second time way off center creating a tab on the rim left of the lower curls. The die struck the obverse rim while the opposing reverse rim was pressed into a new planchet. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0 late. There is a die crack through the top of IBERTY to the rim over the Y, and the area over TY is just starting to sink. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees CW, which is typical for the variety. About 25 examples are known of this very rare variety, and most of those are in low grade.
Estimated Value $6,000-UP.

1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems VG10. Triple Struck Off Center over an Off-Center Reverse Brockage. Glossy medium chocolate brown with areas of darker olive brown and steel on both sides. The surfaces are decent but there are traces of extremely fine granularity on both sides. Only a few trivial contact marks including a rim nick just left of the date. This planchet was struck at least 3 times. One strike is centered on the planchet, and under this strike is an off-center reverse brockage with clear remnants of the incuse fraction at the bust tip. In addition an impression of a new blank planchet positioned off center arcs through the O in OF into the wreath. The most interesting strike was a tab impression about 90% off center to K-9 leaving LIB clearly visible behind the portrait and the U from UNITED showing over TE in the "normal" UNITED. A really neat half cent that clearly displays several types of mint errors. And it comes from a famous collection.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

1807 C-1 R1 NGC graded AU58 Brown. Attractive frosty steel brown with golden light steel faded down from mint color in protected areas. The only marks are a hairline scratch on the neck fading into the hair under the ear and a shallow vertical nick on the A in STATES. LDS Manley state 3.0. A die crack meanders across the top of the 7 and the dentils on the obverse are gone. Our grade is AU55. The attribution is shown on the NGC label.
