Final Operations WW11 Europe Signed General K.Darling 8 May 1995 Douglas FDI postmark on pair on Isle of Man VE Day 10p stamps Final operations WW11 - Europe. Cover depicts 9 para pass through an enemy road block near Brelingen and 6th Airborne links up with Russian troops near wismar May 1945.First allied troops to do so and British airborne troops disembarking from a Stirling at Gardemoen Norway to disarm 350000 German troops and supervise the Liberation 11 May 1945.Cover Flown from RAF Northolt in Douglas Dakota ZA947 of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on the VE Day commemorative flypast over Buckingham Palace at 12.45 hrs 8 May 1995 where the salute was taken by HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother accompanied by HM the Queen and HRH the Princess Margaret.Red flown backstamp.Handsigned by General Sir Kenneth Darling GBE KCB DSO. During the War he commanded the 11th ( TA ) Battalion of his regiment until he volunteered for parachute training. He dropped in Normandy with 6th Airborne Division and was wounded on D + 1 . He succeeded to the command of12th para and led it through the Ardennes the crossing of the Rhine and in the advance to the Baltic. He then took it to the Far East for the Final phases of the War against Japan where he was promoted to command 5th Parachute Brigade in Java. Full details enclosed.
