Die Melbourne and Suburban Railway Company eröffnete 1859 die ersten Strecken. Es bestand unter anderem Anschluss an die Bahn von St. Kilda nach Bay Street, die von der St. Kilda and Brighton Railway Company betrieben wurde. 1865 übernahm die Melbourne and Hobson's Bay Railway Company sowohl die Melbourne and Suburban Railway Company als auch die St. Kilda and Brighton Railway Company. Die entstandene Firma lautete fortan Melbourne and Hobsons Bay United Railway Company. Sie wurde 1878 von der Regierung von Victoria übernommen und Teil der Victorian Railways. The Melbourne and Suburban Railway Company opened a line from Princes Bridge railway station in Melbourne, Australia, to Punt Road (Richmond) and South Yarra in 1859, Prahran in 1859 and Windsor in 1860, connecting with the St Kilda and Brighton Railway Company's line from St Kilda to Bay Street (now North Brighton) in 1859 and Beach Station (now Brighton Beach) in 1861. The St Kilda and Brighton Railway Company and the Melbourne and Suburban Railway Company were taken over by the Melbourne and Hobson's Bay Railway Company in 1865. The combined company was named Melbourne and Hobsons Bay United Railway Company. It was taken over by the Government of Victoria in 1878 and it became part of Victorian Railways.
